How do I determine my skin type?

The long life question that most of us women seek to find the answer to. There are various ways of determining your skin type but the method I’m about to list below is undoubtedly the easiest and most simplistic way of finding out whether you have oily, dry or combination skin. It’s worth noting before we start that generally speaking, most women tend to have a combination skin type i.e. an oily t-zone with quite dry patches of skin on the cheeks and lip area.

Ok so to start cleanse your face like you usually would and remove all traces of make-up.

Next, pat your face dry and leave it for 2 hours without putting any sort of make-up, moisturiser, toner, ANYTHING on. This will allow when your skin usually produces to come to surface (if anything at all) allowing you to easily to determine your skin type.

After two hours take a tissue and peel it in half so you have one very thin piece of tissue paper.

Gently blot a new piece on your forehead, nose area, chin, top lip and both cheeks. Make sure you know where each piece of tissue came from.

Map your tissues out in the shape of your face and then follow the guide below.

OILY SKIN: You will have a bit or a lot of residue on most pieces of the tissue paper.

DRY SKIN: You won’t find any residue on any of the pieces.

COMBINATION SKIN: Like I said before, the most common skin type, many people think they have just oily skin when in fact they have combination. With combination skin you’ll tend to have residue on the forehead piece, nose piece and chin piece then your cheeks and upper lip tissues will be dry. Combination skin is a mixture of oily and dry and therefore the different parts need different treatment.

I’m very sceptical that a ‘normal’ skin type exists at all. I think everyone will fit into one of the above three skin types. On top of those sections you can also have acne prone skin (which falls into the oily skin) and sensitive skin (which typically, but not always will fall into the dry skin category).
