How Artificial Nails Work

Artificial nails are something that can save the look of your hands if you can’t keep long nails yourself, if your own nails don’t look good, or if they are too thin. While years ago artificial nails were harmful and didn’t last long, nowadays there are possibilities to have beautiful hands and save your nails at the same time.

From my own experience of applying acrylic nails, I can tell you now how it really is to have them. At first it was really not what I had expected — it wasn’t the perfect experience for having no more problems about nail care. But what I imagined to happen in the worst case scenario did not happen as well.

The procedure starts with a rather simple cleaning and disinfection of the nail and the skin around it, in order to avoid possible infections if little wounds appear. “Wounds?” I thought when I first heard the word, and later I understood what it meant.

Before pasting the acrylic nail the top of the natural nail should be filed down to the minimal possible thickness — and this can lead to slight scrapes and scratches around the fingernail skin.

Secondly the nail is covered with a glue-like acrylic substance and the artificial nail is pressed on it, then held tightly until proper fixation. Then goes the second filing procedure, which erases the difference in levels between the natural and the artificial nails. Then comes another layer of glue and the third ritual of filing.

I should say it wasn’t the most pleasant thing ever. It is uncomfortable, it hurts, it burns the skin — but it’s definitely bearable. Another short-coming is that you have to visit the professional about twice a month, as the artificial nail moves up with the growing nail and has to be fixed and, yes, filed again.

Despite these disadvantages, acrylic nails can be cut as short as you want to — so it is possible to gain a real natural nail look. These nails definitely look nice, especially if you find time for regular hand nail care and grooming. They are nice to touch, don’t scratch and hold the nail color longer than natural nails.
